What happened in One Piece Chapter 1089?

Over on Dawn Island, the news breaks of Luffy and Garp’s recent exploits. They note that the newspaper fails to mention Garp’s explicit death since his disappearance on Hachinosu. Woop Slap believes that Garp will have survived due to his status as a legend, a sentiment which Makino agrees with. Makino’s baby has become familiar with Luffy’s face, which has been plastered over newspapers for quite some time.

Shortly thereafter, an earthquake of unprecedented magnitude takes place around the world, causing the sea level to rise by a whole meter. This leads to many islands becoming fully or partially flooded. The ramifications are felt throughout various locations, examples being Loguetown, Kano Country, Rakesh, the Twin Cape, Water 7, Wano Country, Impel Down, and Mary Geoise. A ship sent to investigate the epicenter of the earthquake arrives at the site of Lulusia Kingdom’s destruction, where they find a massive, gaping hole in the ocean and absolutely no trace of the kingdom.

Meanwhile, the ships closing in on Egghead are said to be comprised of over 100 ships, all of which receive news of the rising sea levels. The operation to ambush Luffy is being led by nine Vice Admirals and Admiral Kizaru, the latter of whom is eating aboard his ship while communicating with Sentomaru. The pair of them argue over who attacked first and who should surrender following the destruction of the Sea Beast Weapons Kizaru eases the tension by admitting that a battle would not be in their best interests, since it would negatively impact the World Government. Kizaru learns that the CP0 failed in their mission, due to interference from the Straw Hat Pirates.

Kizaru is informed of the signal received from Egghead, which is being intercepted by the Five Elders. They discover York to be the caller, who demands to know why she is due to be killed, but Mars tells her that she is no different from the real Vegapunk. York counters by saying that she was the one who informed them about the Stella Vegapunk’s betrayal. She also reveals that Seraphim is with her.

York asks if the fleets surrounding Egghead are a declaration of war, but Ju Peter skates around the question and instead asks her to recreate the Mother Flame. York reveals that it can be done using the island’s power plant, but only on the condition that she isn’t harmed, the laboratory isn’t destroyed, and she becomes a World Noble. Mars agrees to her terms, but is taken aback when York bursts into tears and begs to be saved from Luffy and the Straw Hats, much to the surprise of the Elders.

When we finally see the full scenario at play, York is chained to the ground and surrounded by the Straw Hats (as well as Bonney, Vegapunk, and Lucci), with Zoro’s sword held over her neck while Usopp arranges the call. Nami and Vegapunk begin to understand the magnitude of the situation, whereas Luffy, not fully understanding it, assumes they can just escape with York as their human shield and bargaining chip. bonney comes to the realization that they are, in fact, in a hostage situation.

New chapters of the One Piece manga can be read outside Japan on Manga Plus and Viz Media. The anime is on Crunchyroll.
