On balancing Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

Capcom isn’t sidestepping specifics when David Sirlin, the lead designer of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, talks about his work. In an interview over at Gamasutra Sirlin explains he wants to “get you past the beginner phase into the intermediate phase” faster by easing the controls. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix removes the Tiger Knee motions and replaces them with other commands like quarter circle forward / Dragon Punch inputs. This removes the challenge of learning the Tiger Knee command without needlessly jumping forward, but this change is a wise one. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix becomes slightly more accessible with easier controls and allows intermediate players to experiment with characters other than Ryu.

 

Speaking of Ryu, Capcom gave him a fake fireball. M. Bison has a fake slide too, which is about all of the new moves announced thus far. Considering the complexity of adding new attacks in I wouldn’t expect Blanka getting a lightning bolt projectile or anything like that. Sirlin believe balancing old moves and making them useful essentially gives old characters new attacks. Capcom has been posting really great summaries of the changes on their blog and a semi-meta post which chronicles the changes of the changes. We’re still not through with all of the characters yet like Vega and I'm still far from being a tournament level player.
