Oculus Account Support Will End on January 1, 2023

Oculus account support now has an end date. The company took to Twitter to announce that January 1, 2023 is the day they will stop working. This is because in October 2020, the company will begin a move to merge Oculus accounts with Facebook accounts. As part of that initiative, all new Oculus VR device users will need a Facebook account to log in.

Oculus, which is owned by Facebook, said this will be part of an effort to connect people easier via the social media platform. It also noted that Facebook timeline livestreaming, chats, Facebook Group support, and events will be available as a result. There will be an “Only Me” option in Oculus settings to prevent people from seeing your full Facebook name and you will be able to limit what VR activity is shared or allow multiple Facebook accounts on one Oculus VR device.

People who choose not to merge can use their accounts as normal until January 1, 2023, but will then see activities and actions limited after that date. Oculus also noted, “We will take steps to allow you to keep using content you have purchased, though some games and apps may no longer work.”

Here is the full statement that was shared on Twitter:

Today, we’re announcing some important updates to how people log into Oculus devices, while still keeping their VR profile. Starting in October 2020, everyone using an Oculus device for the first time will need to log in with a Facebook account.

If you’re an existing user and already have an Oculus account, you’ll have the option to log in with Facebook and merge your Oculus and Facebook accounts. If you’re an existing user and choose not to merge your accounts, you can continue using your Oculus account for two years.

After January 1, 2023, we will end support for Oculus accounts. If you choose not to merge your accounts at that time, you can continue using your device, but full functionality will require a Facebook account.

Giving people a single way to log into Oculus—using their Facebook account and password— will make it easier to find, connect, and play with friends in VR.

The current Oculus VR devices available are the Oculus Quest, which doesn’t require a PC, and the Oculus Rift S, which does.
