Square Enix has revealed new information on Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent, the mobile spinoff that takes place a few years before the main game. New screenshots show off the game’s battle and traversal mechanics, as well as two of the Conquerors doing anything they can to achieve their goal. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]
Battle
Just like the first game on Nintendo Switch, Conquerors of the Continent’s battle system focuses mainly on two aspects – the integral Break & Boost system where you can charge up moves or defense with BP, which can be strategically saved for key moments.
Apart from Break & Boost, there are attack attributes that must be paid attention to, and attacking with attacks that enemies are weak to will lower their shield gauge, which when broken leads to a vulnerable, defenseless state.
Battles occur via random encounter, but you’ll be able to see the stronger enemies on the map before you battle them. Strong enemies are balanced so that you’ll likely meet them when defeating them is possible but not likely.
Path Actions
In Conquerors of the Continent, you can talk to NPCs, and perform Path Actions on them, such as listening in on more information with the Inquire Action. You can also request them to join you as Supporter allies, and each NPC has different abilities.
The Conqueror’s Misdeeds
Unlike the Switch version, you will see play through the story via the perspective of one character. After you choose the story of Wealth, Power, or Glory, you’ll be able to choose the other two that you didn’t choose at the beginning after getting some ways through the first story.
In this story, the Conquerors are great evils who force their will over the land, such as the “Witch of Greed” Helminia’s violent actions against the peasants, and even making young girls sell “suspicious powder” around town at exorbitant prices.
As for Titus, he’s a former hero who wishes to create a strong army, no matter the cost. In order to do so, he kidnaps a researcher’s wife in order to force him to work on a physical ability-enhancing drug, and also makes sure to take advantage of other people’s weaknesses in order to get his will done. He’ll even make a servant who’s served him faithfully for 10 years be a test subject over something as little as accidentally dropping his food.
Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent releases in Japan in 2019 for iOS and Android as a free-to-play title. Registrations for an early-access demo will go live on March 12. You can check out the three villains of the story in our previous report here.
