No, Honkai: Star Rail Is Not an Open World Game

With HoYoVerse’s last major game Genshin Impact being an open world title, someone might wonder if Honkai: Star Rail is too. It isn’t. Instead, this is more a tribute to traditional JRPGs. You’ll go through set environments, like space stations or cities and environments on planets, instead. There are also some sorts of dungeon-like spaces, such as the Simulated Universe.

So far, HoYoVerse only has two games with open world elements active now, and Honkai: Star Rail isn’t one of them. Genshin Impact is a true open world game. There is also an open world element in Honkai Impact 3rd, with maps like Post-Honkai Odyssey, Sakura Samsara, and Schicksal HQ available. Its otome adventure Tears of Themis and Honkai: Star Rail.

If you’re looking for a HoYoVerse open world game, basically, look elsewhere. Genshin Impact is on the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and Honkai Impact 3rd is on PCs and mobile devices.

Also, don’t let the name confuse you. While there are ties between Honkai Impact 3rd and Honkai: Star Rail, it isn’t a sequel.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for PCs and mobile devices, and PS4 and PS5 versions are on the way.
