Nintendo 3DS Reaches 5 Million In Japan, Breaks Record

Nintendo announced today that the Nintendo 3DS is the fastest system in Japan to reach the 5-million-sold mark, which it accomplished in its 52nd week since its February 26th, 2011 release. That’s a new record.

The previous record was held by the Nintendo DS. It took the DS 56 weeks to hit the 5 million mark. Nintendo also released a graph (above) showing how DS and 3DS sales compared with that of the Game Boy Advance and Wii.

The question that remains now is whether or not the 3DS can reach out to non-gamers in the long run, the way the original Nintendo DS did, and what kinds of games will help it do that.
