Ninja Theory’s New I.P. Is Hellblade [Update]

Ninja Theory announced their new I.P. at the PlayStation media briefing during Gamescom 2014 today. The game is titled Hellblade and is in development for PlayStation 4.

Update: Hellblade is not exclusive to PlayStation 4, but will debut first on that platform.

Hellblade is a new I.P. and will focus on the three things that Ninja Theory say define their games: “ninja-class combat, strong character stories, and a unique art vision.” The game, they say, will feature a “brutal, uncompromising combat”.

Ninja Theory are referring to Hellblade as an “independent AAA” game, by which they mean that they are developing and publishing the game themselves, but hope to match the quality and production values of AAA games on the market. They say the game will be delivered digitally at a lower price, and will be a smaller, more focused experience.

A trailer for Hellblade can be viewed above. It features the game’s main character, Senua (no, it’s not Nariko from Heavenly Sword) venturing through a “hellish underworld”. Ninja Theory say they have deliberately announced the game early so that they can take fans along for the ride as they develop Hellblade, and share some insights as to how they go about developing their games.

If you enjoyed Enslaved or DmC Devil May Cry, Ninja Theory say, the goal is to make sure that you will enjoy Hellblade as well.
