Netflix has released the first season of a new show adapted from Red Candle Games’ side-scrolling horror game, Detention. Earlier today, the game’s developer tweeted about the Detention Netflix release to spread awareness of the series. The tweet went on to mention that Red Candle Games is currently busy working on a new game.
The Netflix log line for the show reads, “A tormented student uncovers unsettling secrets at her remote high school as betrayal and a paranormal encounter upend her life.” This description is likely to sound familiar to those who have played the original video game. The show is also listed under the genre “TV Shows Based on Books.” A novel based on the game was released in 2017, authored by the novelist Ling Jing.
This adaptation isn’t the first time the game has appeared in live-action, either. A Detention-inspired film, distributed by Warner Bros. Taiwan and starring the actress Gingle Wang, released back on September 20, 2019.
Detention on Netflix was directed by Su I-Hsuan, Chuang Shiang-an, and Liu Yi according to Netflix. The cast includes Li Lingwei, Han Ning, and Huang Guanzhi. It
As of this posting, there are two episodes of eight available for the show, with two more set to release on December 12, 2020. They will continue to release in pairs every seven days after that.
