The final episode in the Atlus “Josef’s Guide to Combat” Unicorn Overlord trailer series is here, and this time the gameplay element at the forefront is the strategic battles. It shows how to deploy allies during stages and fight foes.

The video begins by showing how someone can deploy units from bases. (This may be familiar from the recently released Switch demo.) You then have a time limit and must get your units to accomplish tasks before time runs out. When allies run into an enemy unit, a battle can begin. However, if multiple units are around an enemy before combat starts in Unicorn Overlord, then you can swap which unit will take part to take advantage of strengths and weaknesses. It also goes over how if one of your units “wins” in combat, the enemy will be knocked back and put in a state where the next time one of your groups of fighters attacks, they’ll strike first.

After introducing basic concepts, the video goes over Valor in Unicorn Overlord. You start with a certain amount when a battle begins and earn more from altercations. These can be used to deploy more units or use a unit’s Valor Skills. The one shown in the video was called Blade Wave. It ended up dealing damage to enemies outside of actual combat.

Here’s the full Unicorn Overlord gameplay trailer. In addition to the combat concepts mentioned, it also went over features like special tools or building on the field like encampments or machinery.

Unicorn Overlord will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X on March 8, 2024.
