Ikumi Nakamura seems to have plans for Okami, or at least she wants to make a case for more Okami. IGN Japan conducted an interview with Nakamura, who became a known games industry presence on a larger scale after an endearing E3 presentation. The interview was nearly an hour long and mostly consisted of questions sent in from fans. Naturally, thanks to her involvement in the series and recent teasing from Nakamura and director Hideki Kamiya, she was asked about Okami. Turns out she has plans to go talk to Capcom and try to make a new Okami game happen. [Thanks, IGN Japan!]
Through one of the translators conducting the IGN Japan interview, Nakamura stated the following:
Regarding Okami, that’s actually the project she wants to make a reality the most. As long as she goes after it, she has a feeling the chances are pretty high that it might become a reality. After quarantine is over and the world becomes normal again, she is planning to make a visit to Capcom and propose the idea, but for her the most important thing is that if it would happen, she wants Kamiya-san to direct it again.
The Okami talk starts about 41 minutes into the video. Nakamura stated that if a new Okami game could be made, she would be happy to have any role as long as she gets to work on it. According to Nakamura, there’s a lot more story to be told in the Okami universe, and that she considers it a work of art from Kamiya. Clearly there’s a lot of passion there, but at the end of the day, Capcom remains in control of the IP.
Okami is available on several platforms, including a recently-released Nintendo Switch version of Okami HD. The sequel, Okamiden, was only released for the Nintendo DS.
