New Mortal Kombat Game Reportedly In Development

A new Mortal Kombat game is in the works according to a comment made by Lance Sloane, the producer of Mortal Kombat Legacy at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

Speaking to GamerHub.tv (via: Polygon), Sloane let slip that a new Mortal Kombat movie is in the process of being greenlit and that it is meant to launch alongside a new game in the series that is currently being developed.

“We’ve been in greenlight committee for a while at the studio and we’ve got a great script,” Sloane said. “And we’ve got a great director with Kevin Tancharoen, who is on board.”

“It’s just figuring out the business side of it and when we would do it and when we would launch it and how do we sync up with the launch of the game that they’re working on now. It’s not 100 percent yet, but we’re getting closer every day.”

The last game in the series, simply titled Mortal Kombat, was released in 2011 and brought closure to the series’ long-running, complicated storyline. Following its release, NetherRealm Studios developed DC Comics fighter Injustice: Gods Among Us.

While Mortal Kombat is primarily known for being a fighting game, NetherRealm Studios are also interested in expanding the series into other genres. Earlier in the year, NetherRealm co-founder Ed Boon said to Xbox 360 Achievements, “I guess everybody at our studio kind of feels like there’s room for Mortal Kombat to expand into other genres. And action-adventure, Shaolin Monks, almost showed that that could be done successfully.”

In the meantime, NetherRealm Studios also plan to continue supporting Injustice: Gods Among Us with further DLC.
