Animation studio Sunrise has announced a new Gundam anime series titled The Witch From Mercury, debuting sometime in 2022. The company has also opened up a brand new website where it will offer updates to fans in the future. However, details remain sparse. [Thanks, Oricon!]
The announcement was made at the 2nd Annual Gundam Conference held online on September 15, 2021. The press release doesn’t provide too many details, but it does note that the series will air on television. Furthermore, The Witch of Mercury will reportedly focus on appealing to a global teen demographic. The new series’ website also offers several language options outside of Japanese.
At the conference, Sunrise also revealed that it is currently working on a film titled Cucuruz Doan’s Island, also releasing in 2022. It will be a film adaptation of an episode from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series of the same name. The latest theatrical release in the Gundam franchise was Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway back in June 2021.
Notably, The Witch of Mercury will be the newest mainline Gundam series to come out since Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans first aired in 2015. Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Chief Gundam Officer Koji Fujiwara notes that The Witch of Mercury is the “first new Gundam series in 7 years,” and hopes that younger audiences will enjoy its inspiring story.
The Witch of Mercury will air on television sometime in 2022. There is currently no confirmed release date or region. Further details will release at a later date.
