New Art Academy Hopes To Teach Both Basic And Advanced Techniques

Recommended Videos

Nintendo announced New Art Academy for the Nintendo 3DS this past week. The game is a follow-up to Art Academy on the DS, and is supposed to teach the user the basics of drawing and painting. However, New Art Academy will also offer more advanced lessons for people that are already artistically capable.

Lessons in New Art Academy will cover drawing and painting techniques, materials and styles. Certain image references for these lessons will be displayed as 3D videos, and it sounds like Nintendo plan to distribute new lessons for the game in the future over Wi-Fi (whether or not this is paid DLC isn’t mentioned).

Tools-wise, you’ll be able to use virtual pencils and paints, colour pencils, pastels, scratch pads, and more. A Colour Wheel will help choose similar or complementary colours when painting painting, and a Blending tool for blending pastel colours together. Creations in New Art Academy can also be shared with other Nintendo 3DS users over the Internet or through the SwapNote app on the 3DS.

Finally, Nintendo say you’ll also be able to create your own art lessons. You’ll be able to distribute these to other 3DS owners. There’s also an in-game virtual museum where you can hang your own paintings as an art gallery of sorts.

New Art Academy will be released in Europe on July 28th. Japan will get the game on September 13th. New Art Academy is also headed to North America, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
