While someone’s initial takeaway from My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me -AO- may be that this is a manga and series with yet another long name, the second is probably how intriguing its “hero” is. We’re presented with someone with an unsettling ability. If Yogiri Takatou wants someone or something to die, it does. With a single thought, it’s dead. From the first volume alone, it shows how interesting and unsettling that can be.

My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered is an isekai that begins with a whole class, and not just one person, spirited away to another world. The Great Sage’s granddaughter Sion summoned them there to get more sage candidates, people capable of great power. After “installing” Battlesong on everyone, Sion lets them know they are all a “clan” and need to produce at least one sage in a month. They all end up with certain “gifts,” which sort them into classes. Except Yogiri slept through the whole thing and his classmate Tomochika Dannoura didn’t get the installation or gift due to seemingly being “incompatible.” The people of “value” left for the city.

So Yogiri wakes up to a dragon attacking the bus, Tomochika panicking, and so he tells it to die. It does. It doesn’t really register for Tomochika what happened just yet. He doesn’t clarify what happened, just because he doesn’t want to be bothered with it. We’re presented with someone strong, who has a power that didn’t come from Sion or this other world, and was already aware of what he could do. It’s so strong it took down a dragon, showing how unnerving it is. And even though he did seem a little surprised to be using the ability “again,” he didn’t hesitate.

However, Yogiri does seem otherwise nervous. He considered that using that ability to protect a girl seems reasonable and normal. He’s interested in games and gets out his 3DS to play Monster Hunter after the threat’s eliminated. He also emphasizes that he cares about Tomochika’s opinion and isn’t going to just act without consulting her and talking it out.

Yet when he sees three classmates flying back, his first thought is “Should we kill them just in case?” When they start to pose a threat, he tells them to die one after another. He only even brings up actually explaining what he’s capable of once the dragon and two classmates are dead. There’s a strange method to his actions, one that doesn’t feel exactly logical, but a there is a sense of reason nonetheless. It leaves him an intriguing figure. Especially as he starts to experiment with the execution of his ability later in the first volume of the em>My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered manga.

It’s this strange sort of hero that helps propel the action forward, even though the general story is also quite compelling. In the My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered manga, Yogiri is incredibly strong, but also seems a bit nonchalant about his power and unbothered when it comes to using it. It’s intriguing to see his mental processes when working it out and putting it into motion, especially since this is a rare case where the main character clearly knows more than the reader. But at the same time, it’s really scary to conceive of someone with that kind of ability. However, it’s balanced in that he does only seem to be using it on people who deserves it. The fact that the first volume ends where it does makes it all the more captivating.

Volume 1 of My Instant Death Ability Is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me -AO- is available now, and volume 2 of the manga will debut on September 19, 2023. Yen Press is also localizing the light novels.
