Nintendo has shared a new video of Hyrule Castle from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as imagined before the rise of Calamity Ganon, completely recreated in Minecraft.

The project was done by Team-Kyo, a renowned Minecraft group that’s officially recognized by Microsoft. They are known for previous creations such as the Tokyo Recreation Project, and other projects at recreating different cities within Minecraft’s blocky aesthetic. This time, they did not only recreate the exterior, but the interior of the castle as well.

Check out the video below:

Here are the highlights from the interview:

So you created this large-scale project with lots of members. Hyrule Castle this time isn’t only large, but also seemingly created down to the finest details. Just how did you go about creating this?

Polyphe, Team-Kyo representative: “We first referenced screenshots taken in the game as well as official data, and then created a design that encompassed the lay of the land to the volume of the structure, down to the single block unit.

After that, we begin to build the blocks while constantly referencing the screenshots.”

At this scale, as expected architectural plans are needed. From that, you place the blocks one by one… That’s a task that requires mental fortitude. How many people were involved, and how long did it take?

Polyphe: “13 members participated in the creation, and in total including quality improvements, it took just around less than 2 months to make. Within that, around the first 2 weeks were spent just on designing the place.”

By the way, tell us which part was the most challenging, and which part you’d like to feature.

Breath of the Wild is charming because of how everything in the world is created down to the finest detail within such a large field. That’s why we also focused on the smallest details, and kept adjusting single blocks up to the final moment.

One particular part I’d like to draw attention to is the main hall. Because it is unreachable in the game itself, we put a lot of work into this part.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available on Nintendo Switch.
