Microsoft plans to expand Japan’s Xbox 360 catalog to 500 games

x250.jpgOne of the reasons why the original Xbox wasn’t successful in Japan was the lack of games. Microsoft tried to quickly push software on store shelves with the Xbox World Collection, but these were not localized games. Games in the Xbox World Collection had Japanese instruction booklets and English menus. At best, it was a slapdash solution.

Microsoft changed their strategy with the Xbox 360. They brought more games to Japan and added Japanese voice acting to most of their first party releases. In the Japanese Xbox 360 ad campaign, Microsoft proudly mentions they have 250 titles available. They aim to double that number by the end of next year. A lofty goal, but it’s not out of their reach. There are plenty of Xbox Live Arcade games they can release in Japan and they are beginning to lure local publishers like Success, Idea Factory and Arc System Works. If Microsoft hits this target 2008 could be an interesting year for the Xbox 360. Perhaps, we will see more Japanese developed action games, RPGs, strategy RPGs and dating sims.
