Famitsu had more info on Valkyria Chronicles 4 this week, introducing three new members as well as the capabilities of Squad E’s tank, the Hafen. [Thanks, RPG Site, and BlackKite on Twitter for the pictures]
Miles Arbeck (CV: Hiroshi Okamoto)
Squad E’s tank driver and maintenance crew. He was Claude’s junior at the academy, and the two of them have been paired up for tank duties since then. He trusts Claude as a tank commander and a squad leader. A serious person with a hobby of photography.
Dan Bentley (CV: Hisao Egawa)
A vehicle maniac who somehow ended up in the Federation army. After working in many squads as a driver, he is assigned to Squad E. He operates the APC and also is a mechanic as well. While he’s a man of few words, he’s quite caring.
Ronald Albee (CV: Atsuki Tani)
Tank commander in Squad F, led by Minerva. Back in the academy days, Minerva was his senior and drilled her sense of chivalry into him. He believes that Minerva will one day reach the highest ranks of the Federation Army.
Tanks and APCs:
The Squad E tank, the Hafen, is operated by Claude and Miles. Tanks are sturdy to withstand gunfire from most footsoldiers, apart from Lancers. However, the blue exhaust at the back of the tank serves as a weak spot that needs protection. Tanks have three types of ammunition:
- Armor-piercing shell: Goes in a straight line, and pierces through armored vehicles like enemy tanks
- High-explosive shell: This is an anti-personnel shell that is arced and explodes to cause a range of damage.
- Machine gun: Can be used during Enemy Phase to gun down enemies in range. Also serves as a close range option for taking down infantry.
Dan Bentley is the driver of Cactus, Squad E’s APC (Armored Personnel Carrier). APCs can carry several soldiers out to the frontlines swiftly, but lack the thick armor of tanks. Players need to be careful not to take heavy gunfire, lest the APC gets destroyed, with the soldiers becoming unusable for a while.
Weapons Research and Development:
At the R&D facility that serves as Squad E’s backup, players can upgrade the weapons and armor of soldiers, as well as upgrade the tank’s capabilities and create parts that can be equipped.
For soldiers, upgraded equipment will apply to every character in that class, so development can raise the overall level of the troops when done strategically.
As for tanks, there are plenty of optional parts, but only so many can be used at once as they fill up a grid (with stronger parts taking up more space), so it should be changed to fit the mission. There is also a spot to place a sticker on the Hafen, and the stickers have various stat increasing effects as well.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 releases in Japan on March 21, 2018 for PlayStation 4 and for Nintendo Switch in Summer 2018. North America and Europe will receive the game in 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
