The official site for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 has been updated with details on modes, including Story Mode, as well as the first Dream Event, Dream Shooting.
Modes
One Match
The Tokyo 2020 games include 21 athletic events, three Dream Matches, and ten 1964 athletic matches made to look retro. You can choose to play by yourself to practice, or play with up to three others in couch multiplayer. Every event is button-controlled, while some of the events work with Joy-Con gyro controls.
Story Mode
Mario, Sonic, and Toad have been sucked into a retro game console thanks to Bowser and Eggman’s schemes. Meanwhile, Luigi and Tails rush to try and help them escape. Will the trio be able to return safely?
The mode consists of both Olympic events as well as other minigames.
Local Wireless
You can play local wireless multiplayer with up to three other players. Some events have co-op play.
Online
Ranked Match (2-8 players)
You can play Dream Event and Olympic events and try improve your rating. You’ll be matched with other players of similar rating.
Free Match (2-4 players)
You can choose to play casual matches in any event you want, or play with 2-4 specific players on any of the event matches.

You can check your current records and Ranked Match ranking.

Dream Event – Dream Shooting
An original event where four players participate in a shooting game. You can play free-for-alls or team matches.
In this event, you shoot acorn bullets at targets in order to collect points. There are many gimmicks in this house of tricks and traps. You can shoot switches to open doors and reveal hidden targets. By shooting consecutive targets, you get a combo bonus.
When a giant kite appears, it’s Chance Time! You can earn many points if you manage to get the Multi-Shot item and hit the kite multiple times.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will appear on the Nintendo Switch in the Americas on November 5, 2019 and in Europe on November 8, 2019.
