Maori Legend Informs The Dungeon Crawling Adventures Of Reverie

Reverie, a top-down adventure game inspired by Maori legends and myth, will have players guiding a young boy on Summer vacation, helping him explore a seaside town as well as creep through dungeons in order to appease angry spirits.

Drawing from Earthbound and The Legend of Zelda, players will explore Toromi Island, a fictional New Zealand island, combing through it for native birds, chats with goofy inhabitants, and the dungeons of the irritable spirits that are making life difficult there. Using child-like weaponry like yoyos, bats, and dart guns, players will battle foes and solve puzzles in the cavernous dungeons, soon dealing with the monstrous bosses the spirits have summoned. A battle with a hostile tumble dryer is not impossible in this silly land.

Reverie is specifically inspired by the legend of Maui and the Giant Fish, where the demigod fishes up the North Island with a powerful fishhook. However, the developers have not gone into great detail into how this reflects in the game’s story and play as of yet.

Reverie is set to bring a lighthearted story, Maori myth, and top-down dungeon crawling together in 2018.
