Mahou Shojo: A Card Game About Magical Girls Kicking Each Other’s Butt

DeerFox Games has made a paper card game called Majou Shojo about magical girls “kicking the sparkle out of each other.” The studio is currently trying to raise $15,000 through Kickstarter to send out the first shipment.

Majou Shojo is inspired by anime series such as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon and Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and it’s aimed for anyone who is aged eight and up.

It’s for two players whose goal is to acquire their opponents’ three magical gems. These gems are gained when your rival’s magical girl reaches zero HP. Of course, to do that, you must throw your best sparkling abilities and powers at them. However, each magical girl has a limited amount of of magic they can use. If they run out of magic before their health points are drained then that magical girl cannot be defeated. It’s possible for some magical girls to become Grand Magical Girls, increasing their power for a short time. Play time for a single match is said to be about 20 minutes.

There’s a tutorial that goes over the basics in more detail below.

Majou Shojo comes with a number of differently themed decks including Nightmares, Daydreams, Sweets, Flowers, the Constellations, and the Internet. DeerFox says that within the card and character design it has recognized that representation for different types of women matter, hence there is “a diverse group of warriors with different ethnicities and body types.”

You can get a Starter Kit with two decks, the instruction book, and the Gem Card Pieces for $20 on the Kickstarter. Higher tiers offer more decks, t-shirts, a comic, and more.
