With the Switch’s release on the horizon, some are wondering if the console’s portability will dash any future possibilities of another handheld from the company. However, in a previous post, we reported that Nintendo’s president Tatsumi Kimishima said that Nintendo is considering a successor for the Nintendo 3DS. Now, Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has further confirmed that the Switch’s portability will not be taking the place of a dedicated handheld anytime soon. [Thanks, NeoGAF.]
Aonuma recently spoke in an interview with EDGE magazine, during which he was asked if the fact that Nintendo’s console and handheld teams being united for the Switch would lead to quicker releases for titles. He also noted that, though the Switch does feature a portable aspect, this does not mean that Nintendo’s “concept of a dedicated handheld will just disappear.”
Here are Aonuma’s full comments regarding the Switch:
“There’s an element of that, but it doesn’t automatically mean things will happen more quickly or more easily. Plus, Nintendo 3DS still has plenty of titles in development. The concept of the Switch is that you have a home console that you can take with you on the go, and in that respect it is both home console and handheld, but it doesn’t mean for us that the concept of a dedicated handheld will just disappear.”
The Nintendo Switch will release on March 3rd, 2017.
