Lapis x Labyrinth’s producer appeared at TGS 2018, where he revealed in an interview around how long it’ll take to beat the game, the difficulty level, and more on the Asia release, which will include Chinese text. [Thanks, Bahamut!]

Here are the highlights:

  • Lapis x Labyrinth is the resulting project of another of Nippon Ichi’s internal game competitions, where anybody can try to get their game made. (Yomawari, The Liar Princess and the Blind Price being other examples.) Currently, game development is nearly done, and is in the testing phase.

  • The producer reveals that the term ‘Dango’ is just a meta phrase that is half meant to be a joke for the battle system.

  • Originally, Lapis x Labyrinth would let players change character outfits in addition to the current color variations and hairstyles, but due to time and staff restraints, they had to compromise the idea.

  • He reveals that the game originally only had six job classes, but thanks to the hard work of the staff, they were able to increase it to eight classes. Furthermore, two of them were to be locked to be gained by the player later on, but they decided in the end to let players use them all from the start.

  • For people new to this genre, the producer recommends using the Hunter, who can absorb enemy health, or the Shielder, who has strong defenses. Experienced people can try out the Gunner, who specializes in firepower.

  • The game takes around 20 hours to complete, but expert players might take only 10 hours to beat the game.

  • The team had to decide between making the game hard or easy, but they balanced the game in the end to be on the easier end to fit the cutesy look.

  • There are no multiplayer elements in this game, offline or online. The producer says that they wanted to focus on making a purely single-player experience. However, if it sells well enough for a sequel, then he’d want to add in multiplayer as well. Furthermore, there is no DLC planned for this game.

  • The game has been determined to be coming out in Asia in Spring 2019. Previously, no release window was given.

Lapis x Labyrinth will make its Japanese debut on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on November 29, 2018. The game will release in Asia in Spring 2019.
