Things happened to the three Avalanche members Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie in the original Final Fantasy VII, but in FFVII Remake and Rebirth it seems like some things are proceeding a little differently. Given we didn’t firsthand see what happened to Wedge at the end of the first part of the trilogy, people might wonder what’s going on with him.Â
Is Wedge dead in Final Fantasy VII Remake and FFVII Rebirth?
Editor’s Note: There will be spoilers for the Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth story, specifically involving Wedge, below.
Wedge has a number of close calls in the original Final Fantasy VII Remake! When they’re stealing materials from Shinra needed to blow up another reactor, he’s attacked, chained, and needed to be rescued by another Avalanche group. It almost looked like he died when the Sector 7 plate fell, because he went in to rescue people and his cats, but Cloud, Barret, and Tifa found him and saved him. When the team stormed Shinra’s tower to save Aerith, he came in with Avalanche to offer support. It’s then that we see some of the Whispers blow him off of the top of the building and through an elevator window.
However, since we never actually saw Wedge die in Final Fantasy VII Remake, there was the thought that maybe somehow he did survive and make it into Rebirth. Alas, once someone gets to Chapter 10 and finishes the Cosmo Canyon storyline, the Protorelic missions for the region reveal that he really is dead.
You can begin Phenomenon Intel 1: Planetological Ruins in the Cosmo Canyon Region before boarding Cid’s Tiny Bronco to head to Nibelheim and start Chapter 11. I highlighted the location of it on the map below.
Once you kick off that quest and get to the location, you’ll meet some folks from the Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERmission DLC. Nayo, Polk, and Billy Bob made it out of Midgar safely, and the Avalanche HQ members are going to lifestream fonts made by the Cetra to repair them. Before you start the new Gambits and Gears minigame tied to these quests, Barret will ask the trio if they know what happened to Wedge. This will trigger a flashback going over what he went through and led him to also head to Shinra’s headquarters.
No spoilers, but I highly suggest you go through these, as you’ll also get some other closure by repairing the fonts.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available on the PS5, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024.
