Electronics manufacturer Sharp demoed their 3D display technology for mobile phones in Tokyo earlier today, according to a report at Boston.com. The site reports that the 3D effect works on a 3-inch screen held about a foot from the viewer’s face, but that images were "less clear and even a bit blurry" when viewed from certain angles.
Mass production of these screens is set to commence in the first half of this new fiscal year. The need for 3D glasses is offset by two parallax screens that send different images to each eye. In addition to viewing 3D content, combined with a camera, the technology also allows for users to take 3D photographs.
A Japanese press release says the screen also has a touch panel, a feature the Nintendo 3DS is likely to have. Sharp’s product is FWVGA (480 x 854 pixels), 500 cd/m2 lumiance, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1.
While Sharp declined to name the companies they are supplying to, if the technology is affordable enough for widespread use, one would expect Nintendo to adopt it post-haste.
