Given the talk about the Rite of the Covenant and Rapport system in Unicorn Overlord, someone might wonder if Unicorn Overlord is like Fire Emblem in that there could be romance between various characters if you pair them up often enough. While Alain can give the Ring of the Maiden to someone during the Rite of the Covenant, other relationships in this Vanillaware game don’t work like ones in Intelligent Systems’ series.
Can characters enter relationships and fall in love in Unicorn Overlord

The answer is both yes and no. Yes, there are certain characters who have pre-established relationships with one another. There are hints that Chloe and Lex may have some feelings for one another. Melisandre is immediately captivated by Alain after meeting him. We learn that Clive and Monica were once betrothed. There are hints that certain people are or have the potential to be “together” eventually or have feelings for each other. You might also notice that, in the Rapport section of the menu, there will be a conversation at the third of the three hearts for the tier levels, suggesting a level of connection not present for other characters. However, Unicorn Overlord is not like Fire Emblem and does not offer the possibility for romance between multiple characters or pairings if you keep them close enough together and get an “S-rank” relationship that permanently bonds them to another person.
The real benefit to building a Rapport between Unicorn Overlord characters is those with a higher relationship with one another will sometimes have support conversations at certain tiers and get stat bonuses when they are in the same unit together.
There is a Rite of the Covenant for Alain, however. He can give the Ring of the Maiden to one of his allies. The ensuing conversations tied to it are more romantic, depending on the character it is given to. So, as one of the obvious examples, Alain giving the ring to Scarlett is going to result in a more romantic response from her and they’ll be bound together for the ending. While most of Alain’s potential partners are women, some men like Ithilion have romance implied as well.
