Nothing is as it seems in Baldur’s Gate 3, and a random encounter in Act 2 with He Who Was and a woman named Madeline is a prime example of this. When you reach the Shadow-Cursed Lands in Act 2, you can stumble upon a sinister-looking man hurting a woman near the main road. Should you side with He Who Was or Madeline in this situation?

Should You Side With He Who Was or Madeline in Baldur’s Gate 3?

When you first stumble upon this bizarre situation in Baldur’s Gate 3, it looks like the man He Who Was is in the wrong for torturing the poor woman. But you need to investigate the scenario more and find out the truth. You can find evidence of what’s really going on by heading to The Waning Moon inn in the town of Reithwin south of The Last Light Inn.

There are quite a few skill checks you’ll need to pass before you can get the ledger evidence in the inn, so I recommend saving beforehand if you worry about failing these. Once you read the evidence, you can pretty much decide for yourself who is in the wrong here.

I would say that both characters are tragic in a way. It is a situation where neither one is truly right or wrong. That said, I do think He Who Was is punishing Madeline when he should be going after the Dark Justiciars instead.

That said, you have three options for the finale of this quest. You can convince Madeline to eliminate herself, let He Who Was finish her, or stop He Who Was and save Madeline in Baldur’s Gate 3. The first and third options don’t give the best items so unless you truly want to be a good person, you should go with the second one.

This grants you the Raven Gloves, which allows you to summon a Raven familiar anytime you want.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC and PlayStation 5.
