Square Enix has offered folks a new look inside Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles’ development. A new video acts as a mini documentary with commentary from Producer Akitoshi Kawazu and Art Director and Character Designer Toshiyuki Itahana. Both talk about what it was like making and designing the original GameCube game.

Both Kawazu and Itahana talk about what made Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles so unique. To start, Kawazu talks about the whole multiplayer premise and the use of the chalice. Since people would normally scatter around in a game where everyone comes together, a fixture that involved the Final Fantasy series crystal staple to force them to stay together was added as a narrative and gameplay mechanic.

Meanwhile, Itahana spent time talking about the character direction. He discussed how both this and Final Fantasy IX played to his signature style and that the pastoral design for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles allowed him to make people “look like the characters from fairy tales.” Itahana also noted that the Yuke race is his favorite.

Here’s the full “Inside Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition” video. While the primary focus is on recounting the development of the original game, some details about the multiplatform remaster come up after the 16 minute mark.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition will come to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Android devices, and Apple iOS devices on August 27, 2020.
