Season 2 of the In Another World With My Smartphone anime is in production. The announcement came courtesy of an update to the series’ official website. The new season will appear nearly five years after the previous season aired in 2017. The site update also included some commemorative art drawn by Eiji Usatsuka, who contributed illustrations to the light novels.
Also known as Isekai Smartphone, the In Another World With My Smartphone anime is based on the titular light novel series by author Patora Fuyuhara. The story focuses on teenager Touya Mochizuki, who died due to an act of God. Only God didn’t intend for Touya to die. By way of apology, God opts to reincarnate Touya in a fantasy world, granting him one request. That request? That Touya brings along his smartphone. Thus equipped with the definitive tool of modern civilization, Touya sets off on an adventure in a world of magic, mystery, and pseudo-medieval tech.
As with the previous installment, studio Production Reed will animate the second season of the In Another World With My Smartphone anime. In another bit of trivia, an editor working at Isekai Smartphone publisher HJ Bunko, tweeted that since the anime aired in 2017, sales of the In Another World With My Smartphone novels have skyrocketed overseas, with English-speaking territories now accounting for more sales than Japan. They clarified that these figures were unrelated to the decision to make a second season of the show, but it’s fair to conclude that the series has seen significant popularity outside its country of origin.
Season 2 of In Another World With My Smartphone is in production. No broadcast window has been specified, but the first season is available to stream on Crunchyroll and other streaming services. The novels are licensed for distribution in English by J-Novel Club and the manga is published by Yen Press.
