Phoenix Wright : Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies isn’t just about Nick; Apollo justice is a playable character, too. In a new demo of the game, I got to play as Apollo and investigate… If Phoenix had been eaten by a giant bird. As the demo began, Apollo and Athena, the new sidekick with a background in psychology, headed out in search of youkai, Japanese folklore creatures.
Phoenix is supposed to be there, too, but he called Apollo and then didn’t show up to meet them. Apollo and Athena investigate, which leads them to a room with feathers and… Is that a blood stain on the floor? Better scout out the area. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies plays like previous games where you poke around the environment in search of clues.
Dual Destinies is less of a pixel hunt since the game changes the cursor when you move on top of a clue. Dual Destinies also marks down which clues you’ve found and shows a different icon if your cursor is touching a clue you already discovered.
The room, which had a giant door and a funky lock in the center, was rendered into 3D. Players can change camera angles by pressing L and R or tapping the sides of the touch screen.Capcom hid some clues that were only visible by changing the camera angle.
Much like Maya would, Athena jumps to the conclusion that Phoenix was eaten by a giant bird. Athena provides comic relief while Apollo has to solve the mystery of what happens to Phoenix. You can help Apollo by selecting the correct piece of evidence to answer Athena’s questions. The short demo ended after I presented proof that Phoenix was, of course, not eaten by a youkai bird.
Phoenix then arrived and broke the fourth wall, telling players they should play Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies to find out what happens next. The game comes out for Nintendo 3DS this fall.
