How to find an animal to tame in Ark: Survival Ascended

Before finding your animal companion, you first need to choose which one you want to tame. As the Island of the Ark is filled with deadly beasts everywhere you look, you should be careful before deciding which creature to take on as your pet.

The first thing to check is if you are strong enough to battle the specific animal you want. For example, a new player will be unable to defeat a Triceratops or a Tyrannosaurus with their current tools, and attempting to do so will quickly have you respawning. Instead, you should choose an animal that you know you can take on with ease, such as the Dodo Bird or the Dilophosaur.

How to tame animals in Ark: Survival Ascended

Domesticating beasts is fairly simple across the game. To tame an animal in Ark: Survival Ascended, you must first knock it unconscious. This is why it is advised you pick a creature you can defeat easily. If you choose an animal that requires a weapon to take it on, you may accidentally kill it.

Once you have subdued the creature, go up to it and place food items in its inventory. Use the various berries you are able to forage from across the island. It is important to note that some foods will work better with some animals. As you continue to feed the animal, the taming meter will go up until you have succeeded. You will know you have completed the process when the option to name it appears.
