Gandrel is one of the many NPCs you can randomly meet in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you head towards Auntie Ethel’s house in the swamps in the southwestern corner of the map, you can meet with this vampire hunter looking for his next prey. Unfortunately, it just so happens Gandrel has a grudge against one of your party members.

How to Handle the Gandrel vs. Astarion Situation in Baldur’s Gate 3

When you first meet Gandrel in Baldur’s Gate 3, Astarion will be quite uncomfortable with interacting with him if he is in your party at the time. If you don’t know about Astarion’s past yet, this conversation won’t go almost anywhere. Gandrel will note he is a Gur hunting after a specific vampire target and that’s it.

However, if you get to know Astarion on a deeper level early in the game, you’ll find out he is a vampire. If you find this out before meeting with Gandrel, your conversation options change and even the hunter himself states the name of his target. At this point, you have the option to give up Astarion or watch what happens next.

If you give up Astarion, you’ll lose him as a party member forever. On the other hand, if you don’t do anything at all, Astarion will attack and kill Gandrel, who you won’t be able to save. In addition, if you hint at knowing Astarion, Gandrel will even follow you back to the campsite.

Overall, the best option is to save both Gandrel and Astarion from their fates. Offer no information and stop Astarion from attacking the hunter. Or, just do this conversation before finding out the truth about Astarion. The only benefit to letting Gandrel die is to get the decent Gandrel’s Aspiration uncommon heavy crossbow.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for the PS5 and PC. It will also release for the Xbox Series X/S later in 2023.
