Matthew is one of the easiest love interests to romance in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life. He rarely leaves his “home” area. One of the items he likes is an item you can immediately get a lot of at your farm right from the start of the game. Also, the responses for his heart events are very obvious. Not to mention unlike some possibilities (Rock), he actually has a job.

How do I romance Matthew in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life?
Part of the goal of Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is to get married to a love interest, since this is a family-focused entry. So you need to get married by the end of chapter one to move on to chapter two and get married. Talking to Matthew every day and doing things like giving him gifts is a good way to catch his eye. He’s fairly easy to romance, since he’s a fan of all crops (as long as the quality is A or higher).
Here’s how Matthew feels about a few particularly notable gifts:
- Loves: I found he adores any kind of S-rank crop you’re willing to give him. It doesn’t matter what kind of vegetable it is.
- Likes: Eggs, Energy Drinks, Milk, any A-rank crop, and any cooked meal. Give him some milk soup, which is milk in the soup category with no other ingredients, or aromatic herb soup that just uses an aromatic herb in the soup section, and he’ll be thrilled.
- Dislikes: He didn’t like anything I tried to give him from digs at the archeological site, like a Clay Figurine.
I noticed he will take the B-rank drops you grow right away too, but he doesn’t get as much of an affection boost from them as he does from S or A-rank ones, so I recommend selling those instead.
Where can I find Matthew in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life?
I’d say 90% of the time, he’s at Vesta’s farm. If he’s not outside by her fields and crops, then he’s either in the main house or the storage building directly next to it. He’s up at 6am, but tends not to leave the house until around 7am or 8am. If it is raining or the weather isn’t great, I noticed he’ll stay inside Vesta’s house past noon.
He’ll also walk along the river around 4pm and 5pm. You can find him at the Bluebird Cafe at 6:40pm as well.
If you bring up the map, which is the – button on the Switch, you can check the map and find out exactly where he is at any time.
How do I check my romance level with Matthew in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life?
Matthew’s bed is on the first floor of Vesta’s house. So as long as Vesta, Matthew, or Celia is home, you can go inside and take a look. His diary is on the table with the plants by the bed closest to the entrance. You can also bring up the menu and check Resident Info to see how things are going with Matthew or any other love interest you are trying to romance in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life. I had Matthew at five hearts when he agreed to my proposal with the Blue Feather, which you get via an automatic and scripted event after Spring in the game’s first year.

How do I see Matthew’s four Heart Events in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life?
They aren’t too difficult to catch in the first year. Note that you don’t have to catch them to marry him. In order to avoid spoilers, I’m not saying exactly what happens in each one, as one of the events offers more intimate details about Matthew’s life.
1 Heart Event
I ended up triggering this heart event on Spring 9th by walking into Vesta’s house around 8am. Marlin will ask what you want. You should then ask what he likes to do in his free time, let him know you can’t get enough of vegetables, and then thank him for offering to help you out.
2 Heart Event
I got to see this event at around 8am on the second day of Fall by heading over to Vesta’s farm immediately after doing some watering. He’ll be lost in thought. Express interest in his dream and assure him you won’t laugh at what he’s about to say. After he tells you about what’s troubling him, assure him it is nothing to worry about and don’t laugh at him.
4 Heart Event
I can’t exactly recall when I saw this event, as I didn’t get a screenshot of the in-game time before or after. But on the 10th day of Fall, when it was sunny, I ended up seeing an event when leaving my farm and heading to Vesta’s sometime after my morning chores. You’ll get a chance to talk with him. Say you want to talk, then say that you are doing well with your new life on the farm.
6 Heart Event
Okay, so, I didn’t see this Matthew event in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life until the second day of Winter around 1pm when heading to Vesta’s Farm. However, I remember seeing it back in the day in Fall, so you may be able to trigger it earlier. You’ll see something is bothering him, so ask him what’s going on. After he explains what is troubling him, reassure him that things will be okay. You then need to refuse to leave when he tells you to.
