The only requirement for recruiting Astarion to your party in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to beat the prologue aboard the mindflayer ship. After you land on the ground, head to the coordinates X: 165, Y: 287. It is little bit northwest of your current location.

When you arrive here, you can speak with Astarion on the side of the road and a cutscene will ensue. You have a few options for how to interact with him, but do not attack him whatever you do. Unfortunately, he will attack you, though.

The key here during this delicate conversation is to not go on the offense and fight back. Soon after Astarion attacks you, your minds will connect due to the parasites in your brains. As long as you hold out and don’t fight back, you’ll come to an understanding about your conditions and he will offer to join you.

It is very much possible to kill Astarion here, if you choose to fight back or attack him, which will render you unable to add him to your party. After he offers to join, he will immediately be added to your current team if you have an open slot or go to the campsite if your party is full.

Be sure to recruit Astarion in this area before going through the mountain pass near the end of Act 1. If you do, you’ll be unable to recruit this fascinating and often frustrating character to your party again.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PCs and will release for the PS5 on September 6, 2023.
