Like in Fire Emblem, Unicorn Overlord allows people to choose a character and promote them to an advanced class. While you don’t need any special seals or key items, it does take quite some time to earn that right.

How do I promote a character in Unicorn Overlord

Well, first you’re going to need to play for quite a while. The promotion option only comes when you hit Renown Rank B. When I finished the first Main mission in Elheim called “The Winding Wood,” as that is where I went first after completing “The Priestess, Abducted” Main quest, I was able to trigger the Overworld Quest “Better than Ever” by talking to some NPCs near a fort. This explains that visiting a fort let’s you promote a unit.

However, this doesn’t happen right away. You need to reach Rank B. Once you do, Josef will alert you the feature is available. You can then promote units. The Honors currency you’ve been earning all along allows you to change to an advanced class in Unicorn Overlord. Selecting Promote in a fortress menu lets you invest in a character.

The cost of promoting varies, and there is no level requirement. So major characters like Alain, Scarlett, and Virginia cost 50 Honors to promote. Some only cost 25 Honors, as that is all it takes to turn Lex from a Fighter to a Vanguard. As another example, Travis costs 30 Honors to go from a Thief to a Rogue.

Unicorn Overlord is available for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X
