In Dragon’s Dogma 2, you need to learn Elvish to understand the citizens of Sacred Arbor. This guide will explain how to learn Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2 to unlock quests in Sacred Arbor.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 how to learn Elvish guide
If you are traveling north of Vernworth Capital, you may eventually stumble across the Sacred Arbor village while exploring deep into the woods. If you were confused when you couldn’t understand anyone, you are not alone! I spent way too much time stumbling through menus, trying to guess what they meant. If you learn Elvish, though, you will not only be able to communicate with everyone in Sacred Arbor but also unlock new quests.
In Dragon’s Dogma 2, you can learn Elvish by either hiring a Pawn that has a “Woodland Wordsmith” specialization or befriending an elven NPC. Both methods are valid. However, you will actually need your Arisen to learn the language if you want the perk to be unlocked permanently. Below are the steps you need to take to learn Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2:
- Visit the Grand Rifstone in Vernworth and enter it.
- Look for a Pawn that has the “Woodland Wordmsmith” specialization.
- If you can’t find a Pawn with this skill, that’s okay. Go to the next step.
- Collect four “Bunch of Flowers.” You can get this item by combining two different flowers together. There are Sunblooms and Noonblooms in the cliffs around Vernworth through the north gate exit.
- Travel to the Sacred Arbor and go to Kough’s Inn.
- Speak to Kough and then press “Square” (PlayStation) or “X” (Xbox) to give her a gift.
- Gift Kough three Bunch of Flowers.
- Speak to Kough again and select the top dialogue option to “Rest” at the Inn.
- The next morning, when you wake up, speak to Kough and give her one last bunch of flowers.
- Kough will then give you the “Woodland Wordsmith’s Tome” item.
- Pause your game and use the Woodland Wordsmith’s Tome in your inventory to teach your Main Pawn Elvish.
- Your Arisen will now be able to understand Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
How to get Woodland Wordsmith in Dragon’s Dogma 2
The quickest way to learn Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is to hire a Pawn with the “Woodland Wordsmith” Specialization. While Pawns are random, I was able to find one easily at the Grand Riftstone in Vernworth. Simply head to the city’s center, interact with the giant rift, and enter it.
While inside you want to look for any Pawn with the “Woodland Wordsmith” Specialization. To make this easier to understand, I have provided an image below of the Pawn I found in my game. You will want to look at its “Specialization” category for the Elvish wordsmithing ability.
Once you hire a Pawn with Woodland Wordsmith in Dragon’s Dogma 2, they will automatically translate all Elvish when you are inside the Sacred Arbor. While this will allow you to understand everyone, this is only a temporary solution. If you dismiss this Pawn, you will lose the ability to understand Elvish.
Where to find Woodland Wordsmith’s Tome to learn Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2
To permanently learn Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you must obtain the Woodland Wordsmith’s Tome by befriending an NPC in the Sacred Arbor. The quickest way to do this is to gather four “Bunch of Flowers” items and give them to the Kough at the Sacred Arbor Inn. However, you will need two different flower types.
You can find Sunbloom and Noonbloom flowers on the cliffs around Vernworth. Specifically, take the north gate exit and head for the hills. You can also find Sunbloom on the path leading to the Sacred Arbor, as well as a field of Moonglow flowers near the entrance of the elven city. For your convenience, I will provide a map of where you can find flowers in Dragon’s Dogma 2:
Once you find both flowers, go to your inventory screen and press “Square” (PlayStation) or “X” (Xbox) to access your “combine menu.” Combine Sunbloom and Noonbloom to create a “Bunch of Flowers.” You can also combine Sunbloom and Moonglow. You need to make at least three “Bunch of Flowers,” although I personally recommend four, as you will need a fourth gift to make this method work.
Now that you have your flower gifts, it’s time to head to the Sacred Arbor. You can reach this city by traveling north from Vernworth. However, I find it easier to take an Oxcart from Rest Town to Vernworth. If you get attacked by a raid on the way to Vernworth, you will get dropped off near the branching path that leads directly to Sacred Arbor. You can find the path that leads to Sacred Arbor on this map here:
Once inside Sacred Arbor, you want to head north to Kough’s Inn. The building can be found on your map marked as a bed icon. It’s fairly close to the city’s entrance, so you should be able to reach it pretty quickly as soon as you step inside the elven town.
After entering Kough’s Inn, speak to the innkeeper and press “Square” (PlayStation) or “X” (Xbox) to give a gift to Kough. Give her three Bunch of Flowers. You want to repeat this process three times and then stop. Even if you don’t understand what she’s saying, keep count of each gift you’ve given.
After gifting Kough a third Bunch of Flowers, talk to her again and select the top dialogue choice. This is the “rest” option and will have you sleeping at the Inn. After waking up the next morning, gift her one more Bunch of Flowers (or, at this point, you can give her any gift). After receiving her fourth gift, Kough will give you the Woodland Wordsmith’s Tome in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
To learn Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you want to select the “Woodland Wordsmith’s Tome” Kough just gave you and use it to teach the Specialization to your Main Pawn. Because your Main Pawn now knows Elvish, your Arisen will permanently understand the language.
You can learn the Sacred Arbor language by befriending other elven characters in the game. However, this is the quickest method I found to learn Elvish in Dragon’s Dogma 2. If you are struggling to find Bunch of Flowers, you can try gifting Kough “Jasper” or other expensive items. Just make sure you sleep in the Inn.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
