Not long after Mario gets to Rogueport in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, he can be responsible for crushing a poor Toad’s contact lens. Why? Because he dared to head toward the western side of the town. You can’t proceed through to Rogueport West until you get a new contact lens, but this is really just a clever way of keeping you from progressing past a certain point until you advance the story.

After you walk toward the western side of Rogueport and step on the contact belonging to the Toad with a yellow cap, white hair, and red apron, you can go ahead and visit the nearest shop. It’s in the main square. Talking to the Toads running it will verify they can get one for you, but it will take some time to ship.

Don’t worry about routinely checking back on the shop’s inventory. Visit the Petalburg. Beat Hooktail. Get the first Crystal Star. Basically, go through the first chapter of the game.

Once you return to Rogueport after seeing certain events in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Mario will get an email about the contact lens. Head to the Rogueport item shop. It will now be on the left side of the counter for 10 coins. Buy it, then head to the Toad in the red apron blocking the entrance to Rogueport West. You can then give the character the item and immediately gain access to the new area.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is available for the Nintendo Switch. It originally appeared on the GameCube.
