Like Disney Dreamlight Valley, thorns block your way to many areas in Fae Farm. While you can’t get past them in the introduction, once you’re past the first chapter and settled in, you’ll be able to take on Alaric’s “Meeting Magic with Magic” quest to find a way through. In fact, by the afternoon of the second day on Azoria, I had completed the quest to get a staff and was ready to start swatting away those vines.

How to Clear Thorns in Fae Farm

This is a quest you can’t miss. After landing on Azoria, you’ll eventually be directed to meet with Alaric. However, the town’s only wizard won’t just give you the magical staff to deal with the thorns blocking many of Fae Farm’s roads. You first need to complete a brief fetch quest. He wants Broiled Shellfish to eat.

Head down to any of the beaches below. You need a single mussel for this recipe, and they’re a common item you can forage from any beach around town. After you get one, head back to the campfire you set up outside your new home during the tutorial. Interact with it and select the mussel. It will turn into Broiled Shellfish after a cooking for a brief time.

Once you have the dish, head back to Alaric. You won’t go through the thorn-clearing Fae Farm tutorial right away. Since this is tied to one of the static story segments, you need to head home and end the day first. First thing next morning, you’ll see the scene where you meat Alaric and get your staff. Unlike other forms of magic to clear blocked areas, you don’t actually need to use any of your mana bar to clear blockades. Just use the triggers to shift through equipment until you’re holding your wand, swing your staff with the action button when you’re in front of thorns, and they’ll immediately disappear.

Fae Farm is available for the Nintendo Switch and PC.
