How Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion Came Into Existence

Speaking with Gamasutra, Henry Hatsworth developer, DreamRift, shared a few details on the development of the upcoming Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion for the Nintendo 3DS. Ideas that will be in the final game, DreamRift say, were already in development before the project began.

After work wrapped up on Monster Tale for the Nintendo DS, DreamRift co-founder, Peter Ong, and technical director, Ryan Pijai, began discussing ideas for a 3DS game where the player would draw objects on the touch screen, and these would then be placed into the game world itself on the top screen.

DreamRift began shopping the concept around to publishers, including Disney Interactive. When Disney caught wind of the idea, they shared with DreamRift that they already intended to bring Epic Mickey to the Nintendo 3DS in some form, and that DreamRift’s drawing idea would suit an Epic Mickey game well.

Since Power of Illusion is a spiritual successor to Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Ong hopes that people who played the Genesis game will appreciate the 3DS version. "Being huge fans ourselves of Castle of Illusion, we hope that everyone who plays our 3DS game will find some measure of what made us love the original game so much," he said.
