Mortal Kombat 1 is a new entry from Netherrealm Studios that attempts to act as a soft reboot for the long-running, gory fighting series, while also following up on the wild ending of the previous game. This new universe for the classic characters means new looks, fighting styles, and more for fan-favorites. Here are all of the characters we currently know about in Mortal Kombat 1.

All confirmed characters in Mortal Kombat 1 so far

At this time, there are only 15 characters that are confirmed for the launch of Mortal Kombat 1. In contrast, its predecessor, Mortal Kombat 11, launched with roughly 25 characters before all of the later DLC.

As such, there is the potential for more characters in the future, but here’s we know about for now:

  • Goro (Kameo character)
  • Jax (Kameo)
  • Johnny Cage
  • Kano (Kameo)
  • Kenshi
  • Kitana
  • Kung Lao
  • Liu Kang
  • Mileena
  • Raiden
  • Scorpion
  • Shang Tsung (pre-order bonus DLC character)
  • Sonja (Kameo)
  • Stryker (Kameo)
  • Sub-Zero

What’s new for Mortal Kombat 1 is that players pick two fighters when they go into a bout. The first fighter is the core playable character that they’ll control most of the time. These fighters will use new moves. (They’ll also have new lore and backstories, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion now being brothers.) However, we can also pick a Kameo character to join them, which is a new feature.

These Kameo characters act as supporters, occasionally hopping into the fight to perform a move or assist in other various ways. What’s unique about this is that Kameo characters can sometimes also be playable fighters, but some of them will exclusively be support characters.

Shang Tsung is also, for now, exclusively available as a pre-order bonus character. Anyone wants to play as this classic villain will have to pre-order the game for the platform of their choice.

Mortal Kombat 1 will release for the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on September 19, 2023.
