Gungrave G.O.R.E. has been a long time coming, but its time is approaching closer. Though it was first announced by Gungrave VR developer Iggymob back in 2017, numerous delays pushed its release window back to 2022. Publisher Prime Matter revealed the first detailed look at its characters and gameplay in the form of a “Gameplay Reveal + Extended Cinematic” trailer at the ongoing Tokyo Game Show 2021.
The Gungrave G.O.R.E. trailer opens on the cinematic, violent death of a gang of thugs at the hand of Grave, the main character. Grave emerges from a huge coffin, and carries another slung behind his back to hold a number of built-in weapons. Gameplay footage from various stages is shown. This shows the game to be something of a hybrid of third-person shooter and character action title. Grave uses dual handguns, his coffin, and the powers of an undead super-soldier to lay waste to his enemies.
Gungrave G.O.R.E. is based on the long-dormant Gungrave series of action games. Before Gungrave VR, it last saw a release in 2004: Red Entertainment’s Gungrave: Overdose for the PlayStation 2. Gungrave follows the adventures of Grave, a man killed and raised from the dead to exact bullet-riddled vengeance on the people who killed him. Gungrave boasts character designs from Trigun creator Yasuhiro Nightow and Sakura Wars character designer Kosuke Fujishima.
A post on the PlayStation Blog also highlighted the involvement of artist Ikumi Nakamura (formerly of Capcom and Tango Gameworks) in contributing character designs. In the interview, Nakamura revealed her “Ikumi-nized” approach to character design, revealing concept art of the villain Yensen Superior.
Gungrave G.O.R.E. is in development for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. It is due for release in 2022.
