Guarding mages with Lost Odyssey’s Wall

While we’re discussing different combat systems today let’s take a look at what Mistwalker is going to do differently in Lost Odyssey. Previously we mentioned the precision aiming system where you pull the right trigger as a circle zooms into an enemy. The precision aiming system is the offensive side of Lost Odyssey. The wall is the defensive side.

Before battles you set up your party with warriors blocking magic users. The warrior characters semi-tank for the mages by making a wall that reduces damage. On the top right hand corner of the screen you can see the wall meter. Each time your tank characters take damage the wall starts to fall apart and the mage characters take even more damage. The strategic wall concept reminded me of MMORPGs. Usually you have a persistent tank protecting the HP-low magic users.

During the new Lost Odyssey demo I saw Kaim walk on a windy mountain top. As he paced forward he placed his hand in front of his face to shield himself from the gusts of wind. Lost Odyssey has details like that crafted in, which makes it look pretty incredible. However, I didn’t get to play the game at Tokyo Game Show and it doesn’t look like Microsoft is going to let the general public play it before it comes out on December 6th in Japan. There are no plans to release an online demo like they did with Blue Dragon for the US.
