After many, many years, fans of the Goemon series will be able to try out the second Super Famicom game in English, thanks to a fan translation that was released for the game in late January 2020. Ganbare Goemon 2: Kiteretsu Shogun McGuiness came out in 1993, but never made it overseas.
Ganbare Goemon 2 sets up a situation where Goemon and Ebisumaru don’t get to enjoy a break after saving the day in the original The Legend of the Mystical Ninja. McGuiness and his army are trying to take over Japan. It is up to the ninjas to save the country.
Like the first game, Ganbare Goemon 2 is a side-scrolling beat ’em up with some RPG mechanics, such as money and buying items. However, compared to the first game, the side-scrolling sections take up the main portion of gameplay, rather than the quarter view sections where you can move up and down the field. Two players can play at once, with the second player taking control of Ebisumaru or Sasuke. Goemon, Ebisumaru, and Sasuke each have their own strengths and weaknesses, as well attacks with different properties.
The game is split into stages, with a different story beat for each section of the game. Ganbare Goemon 2 features scenarios such as giant robots landing in ancient Japan and more, as McGuiness attempts to cause trouble and kidnap important people.
