Back on the grayscale Game Boy, Capcom made an action game where you played as one of the enemies from Ghosts ‘n Goblins. Gargoyle’s Quest starred Firebrand and followed him through the Ghoul Realm. A notable gameplay mechanic was Firebrand’s ability to fly. Well, maybe not "fly" since Firebrand cannot move upwards. He hovers over spikes and can latch on to walls.
While the action parts were side-scrolling levels, Gargoyle’s Quest also had towns to explore and extra lives to purchase – if you had enough spare vials. On the overworld, Firebrand could talk to characters and earn items like… a magical fingernail that makes him jump higher. (That’s a real power up.) Firebrand also gains new breath abilities that let him break blocks and create temporary platforms on spiked walls.
Gargoyle’s Quest is available on Japan’s eShop for 400 yen ($5) and I imagine this version is better than the original since you don’t have to copy long passwords. The Nintendo 3DS has a state save feature. Golf from Nintendo and Pac-Man are also available for Virtual Console in Japan.
