Gamescom 2020 Preparations ‘Continuing as Planned’ Amid Coronavirus Concerns

With multiple events canceled to help flatten the curve of COVID-19 coronavirus cases, gamescom 2020 is the latest to offer an update on its event. So far, things look promising. While the team running the event did state on Twitter that it would “follow the recommendations of the responsible authorities,” it also stated that it is behaving as though the event will run as planned. However, should it be canceled, refunds will be issued.

Here is the full gamescom 2020 statement regarding a potential delay or cancellation caused by the coronavirus.

Dear Community,

We are currently receiving enquiries about how a possible threat from the corona virus [sic] could affect gamescom.

We take this topic very seriously because the health of all trade fair visitors and partners is our top priority.

On [March 10, 2020], the city of Cologne banned all major events with more than 1,000 participants up to and including [April 1, 2020] on the basis of a decree issued by the state government on the same day. Since gamescom takes place at the end of August 2020, we are currently not affected by this decree. However, we will of course follow the recommendations of the responsible authorities regarding major events, evaluate them on a daily basis and make our decisions after careful consideration. The preparations for the #gamescom2020 are continuing as planned according to the current status for the determined date.

Should gamescom be postponed or cancelled by Koelnmesse, all ticket purchasers of the official ticket shop will be reimbursed for the already paid visitor tickets. Voucher codes lose their validity and will be made available again for new events.

Multiple events have been canceled or delayed as a result of the spread of COVID-19. GDC 2020 was postponed. E3 2020 was canceled. Most recently, BitSummit 2020 was postponed.

At the moment, gamescom 2020 is still set to run between August 25-29, 2020 at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.
