The Until Dawn remake was announced for the PlayStation 5 and PC at PlayStation’s State of Play on May 30, 2024. Since this interactive horror game’s debut in 2015, many titles similar to it have been released. There were also gripping interactive stories that came before it. If you liked Until Dawn, here are games you should play as you wait for the remake.
The Quarry (2022)
Also developed by Supermassive Games, The Quarry’s setting is similar to that of Until Dawn. Each story takes place in an eerie forest surrounded by dangers that could lead to your death. Quick time events (QTE) are a crucial gameplay mechanic across both titles. Like Until Dawn, failing a QTE in The Quarry can result in a character’s demise, altering the story’s outcome.
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan (2019)
Supermassive Games partnered with Bandai Namco Entertainment to release The Dark Pictures Anthology series in 2019. Exploring a WWII shipwreck in the South Pacific, Man of Medan follows five people trying to survive until help arrives. Man of Medan incorporates the elements of Until Dawn, such as life or death QTEs, that add online two-player co-op and five-player couch co-op.
Life is Strange (2015)
Life is Strange is an interactive game that displays an emotional story of teens navigating the world. Depression, bullying, and loss are company to other themes that make this game worth your time if you like Until Dawn. The protagonist, Max Caulfield, reunites with her estranged friend as she learns about her ability to rewind time.
With the rewind ability, you are able to solve puzzles or stop terrible events from occurring if you choose to. Life Is Strange also has a dialogue system in which some decisions affect the story in places. However, those choices aren’t as drastic as Until Dawn in some cases.
Detroit: Become Human (2018)
With 85 endings, Detroit: Become Human is a game where your decisions as the player affect the outcome you get in a big way. Play as Conner (a detective), Markus (an android), and Cara (an android) in a near future Detroit in the year 2038 as they navigate the prejudices of humans against sentient beings. The player’s choices could lead to a main character’s death, as it would in Until Dawn.
The Walking Dead (2012)
Telltale’s The Walking Dead precedes Until Dawn a few years, debuting on April 24, 2012. The plot of The Walking Dead follows Lee Everett as he navigates the new world overrun with the undead. Like Until Dawn, The Walking Dead weighs a player’s choice heavily.
Saying the wrong thing to a character could make them less likely to help Lee or another in a future interaction. The game constantly puts you in a situation where you have to pick who survives or not. Telltale makes these decisions harder by giving you carefully crafted characters to connect with.
AI: The Somnium Files (2019)
While there is quite a stark difference in tone, AI: The Somnium Files branching storylines invoke a similar essence to Until Dawn. Play as Detective Kaname Date to uncover the identity of a serial killer. Investigate crime scenes by scanning for evidence and talking to those involved. Diving into the Somnium lets you enter a person’s dream to find clues. The choices made here change the outcome of the story.
All of these games are unique in their approach to storytelling for games. There are a plethora of titles I didn’t mention, such as The Wolf Among Us or As Dusk Falls, that also have branching storylines based on your choices. However, if you enjoy Until Dawn, these are all games worth checking out right now.
The Until Dawn remake is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and PC in fall 2024.
