Sanrio has published its fan content guidelines for Fragaria Memories, which are fairly limiting. However, Sanrio states that the restrictions are not to limit fan activities but so that everyone in the fandom can have fun and enjoy themselves.
Here is the list of guidelines for creating fan content for Fragaria Memories:
- You cannot use its characters as part of marketing, whether you receive payment or not. For example, you cannot draw a Fragaria Memories character on a poster for an anime convention. However, so long as you properly follow the guidelines, you’re allowed to monetize fan content of Fragaria Memories.
- You cannot trace official artwork or directly import any official materials in your fan content. This includes the logo and the music.
- You cannot pretend or act like you are releasing official content or working on Fragaria Memories in an official capacity. You also cannot pretend that Sanrio has given you permission to release something.
- Sanrio forbids the creation of content that destroys the image of the characters or the worldview, You also cannot use the characters to promote religious or political messages. Content that destroys the image of the characters is fairly broad. So it’s unclear if Sanrio means here that dead dove content is off-limits.
- You cannot act in a way that slanders other people. Sanrio also forbids any fandom activities that would go against the basic rules and laws of polite society.
- When engaging in fan activities, you cannot directly use source materials from any companies that Sanrio collaborates with in the future.
When creating fandom content that you want to sell, you must sell it for around the same price as the original materials. In other words, you cannot turn a huge profit per item. You must also place this QR code somewhere that’s clearly visible to your customer. This is to denote that your work is fanmade content and not official.
As for videos that you want to monetize, Sanrio only allows you to upload them to either YouTube or Niconico. From there, you simply need to follow Sanrio’s guidelines, as well as the video sharing service’s. Finally, Sanrio does not encourage the distribution or selling of goods such as accessories or plushes. This is because it’s really easy to mistake these as official merchandise. If you want to upload images of it onto social media, it asks that you note that it’s fanmade.
