Square Enix‘s new magical parkour adventure Forspoken is playable on the show floor at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, and to capitalize on that proximity, the company released a new story trailer for the game.
Check it out below. At the time of this writing only the Japanese trailer is uploaded, though. In Japanese, Frey is voiced by Umeka Shouji. Shouji also played Camilla in Spy x Family and Catherine in Birdie Wing.
At about two-and-a-half minutes long, the trailer mostly focuses on story beats, rather than gameplay. A montage of scenes from the game include protagonist Frey Holland’s arrival in the exotic land of Athia from New York City, and her interactions with its residents. As someone from another world, she’s met with some hostility from the powers that be, who see her and her surprising magical abilities as demonic. She has a talking companion, in the form of “Cuff”, her bracelet, as well. From the Athian city of Cipal, Frey will take on quests and explore the world, while finding out more about the inciting incident behind Athia’s crisis, “The Break.”
Forspoken‘s gameplay blends mobile parkour with elemental magic, with Frey able to switch between various types of magic to fire deadly blasts, lay complex traps, and weave together devastating combos to annihilate her foes. Square Enix showed off a ten-minute chunk of active play in August.
Forspoken launches on PS5 and PC on January 24, 2023.
