Following the first reveal of Borderlands 3 gameplay, the new voice actor for a returning character has been revealed. Someone known for royal roles like Noctis in Final Fantasy XV and Roy in Fire Emblem will be voicing Tales from the Borderlands‘ Rhys: Ray Chase.
Chase confirmed his role as Rhys in a tweet on Twitter, where he shares a screenshot of the character as he appears in Borderlands 3. He also noted that he was inspired by Troy Baker’s appearance as Rhys and that he played through all of Tales from the Borderlands.
I’m honored to announce that I play mustache Rhys in Borderlands 3.
I played all of TftB and greatly admired @TroyBakerVA‘s hilarious performance – his work is a true inspiration to me! I’m not a perfect voice match, but a new interpretation.
I sincerely hope you enjoy! pic.twitter.com/nbgESmBOXv

After the Borderlands 3 reveal, there was a bit of controversy about the Rhys voice actor. When Baker was at Supanova Melbourne 2019, he said Rhys wasn’t played by him and made comments that suggested he would have wanted to return to play the character. Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, then said in a tweet that “I was told by the audio director that [Baker] turned [the role] down.” Baker then said in an Only SP interview that wasn’t the case.
Borderlands 3 will arrive on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on September 13, 2019.
