Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has an unbelievable amount of minigames for players to sort through, but don’t let this distract from one particular Gold Saucer experience: Chocobo Racing. The FFVII Rebirth Chocobo Racing minigame is one of my favorite parts, and I’ve spent enough time to help you master it.

How does Chocobo Racing work in FFVII Rebirth?

Chocobo Racing in this remake works sort of like a weighty Mario Kart with some twists, like different ranks and grades that you unlock the more races you win. There are the usual speed boosts on the ground you want to always hit to get an edge on your opponents. However, there are also three unique systems and items you want to collect: the yellow, red, and blue objects.

Yellow ones give you your dash ability, which is a short burst move. Red ones add up over time to give you a speed boost for a time. Blue ones are a semi-permanent speed upgrade with a max of 10. Blues are the most important, so gather them when you get the chance, but watch out as your speed goes down if you crash into a wall or other character. Red are second most important, because the speed boost at max lasts for a very long time. Dashes are good for momentary boosts.

How do I win Chocobo Races in FFVII Rebirth?

Part of winning the various Chocobo Racing grades in FFVII Rebirth comes down to understanding attributes. Each of the Chocobos you get in every region has different stats.

Here are the following stats, as well as what you should know about each one:

  • Acceleration: How fast you get to your top speed.
  • Cornering: Helps with drifting around corners.
  • Intelligence: Affect this Chocobo’s unique ability.
  • Speed: Your general top speed.
  • Strength: Similar to weight in keeping you from slipping.
  • Weight: Determines how easily you fly or get knocked around.

In the end, if you are skilled enough, you can make most races work no matter what Chocobo you use. My favorite two are Piko and Selena, due to their abilities and stats. Selena’s ability to fight against other Chocobos is especially great.

From there, it is all about starting off on the right foot. Press the X button as soon as the timer shows the “2” to get a massive boost, which can often put you immediately in first place. Then you want to practice mastering drifting around corners to stay on the track and not lose speed. It takes some practice, but as long as you focus on what matters the most and equip any equipment you have on your Chocobo that greatly boost your stats (you can get more at the Chocobo Square with gold plumes you get from unlocking Chocobo Stops in the world), you should be good to go.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available right now exclusively for the PS5.
