After years of neglect, Fate/Grand Order‘s unloved Irish hero is getting a substantial update. Fionn mac Cumhaill is a 4-star rarity Lancer-class Servant from the game’s launch roster. Thanks to an update teased during the Fate/Grand Order Chaldea Park event in Japan, the long-suffering character will receive revamped combat animations The update will add bespoke fighting and skill animations to Fionn, as well as updating his default character model and Noble Phantasm sequence. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
Check out Fionn’s new Noble Phantasm and compare it with the older version above:
Fionn mac Cumhaill has had a rough time in Fate/Grand Order. Saddled with unimpressive combat performance and a mundane-looking Noble Phantasm, he received little love from the players. Then, he began to receive outright hate from some, thanks to his tendency to appear repeatedly in their gacha rolls. As part of the general summoning pool, Fionn has a chance to appear on any premium summoning attempt. Thus, players who rolled frequently saw him quite often, so much so that jokes abound about players selling him off on sight for Rare Prism currency.
That being said, updates have greatly improved Fionn mac Cumhaill’s performance over the years. It’s about time that his looks grew to match that improvement.
If there’s a caveat to the development, it’s that players on the English version of Fate/Grand Order may be in for a long wait. The animation update will arrive on the Japanese edition of the game soon. Unfortunately, the English edition lags behind that by close to two years.
Fate/Grand Order is available on Android and Apple iOS devices.
